The Sierra Flor School is a small School and Day Care Center located in a rural peasant area in the Andes, close to the volcano Cotopaxi.
Program Description
Our school gives education up to the 4th grade, and our Day Care Center receives children from 3 months old to four years old. We provide our children with quality, bilingual education because we believe it is the only way to escape poverty. As a volunteer, you will become a part of our “family” by teaching and monitoring the kids in all of their activities through out the day.
Volunteer Work Activities
The volunteer will help the teacher in the classroom, prepare the materials, help the children do their homework, participate or supervise playtime. They will monitor the children in every activity - lunch, showers, ect. They also have to keep all spaces clean and in order.
Volunteer Profile
We are looking for men and women at least 22 years old who are willing to stay for at least two months – the whole year would be the best. The volunteers should also have attended at least 3 years of college.
The volunteers should:
• Be patient enough to work with young children and enjoy it.
• Have some experience with young children.
• Be able to work in a team.
• If English is the native language of the volunteer, the communication with the children must be in English. Accommodation
The volunteer project offers the accommodation in a dorm shared with other volunteers. Sierra Flor provides its volunteers with breakfast, midmorning snack (i.e. fruit), lunch, and a snack (i.e. yoghurt) in the afternoon from Monday to Friday.
Volunteer Time
The school is open from September to July. The volunteer will work 8 hours a day, Monday through Friday
Requirements
An intermediate level of Spanish is required. If the volunteer is not at this level, Ecuador Volunteer could help him/her to find the best program to improve his/her Spanish skills before starting the project.
