Project Description
The Remar Foundation has six programs in which support and attention is given to all different kinds of people in need of help, such as small children, youngsters, young mothers, adults who are looking for rehabilitation, etc. At the moment the foundation is looking for volunteers for a project called Hogar de Niñas ´La Gasca´ which is located in the northern part of Quito. In this area of the city there are many universities and student activities and it is about 15 minutes from La Mariscal by bus.
Volunteer Work Activities
- Part of the volunteer work consists of social work. Talking to and helping the poor people is an important part of the job and one of the most essential activities is to show and teach young mothers how to be affectionate with their children, especially those who have different types of handicaps.
- The volunteer will have an educational role in this projects as well. Helping and teaching the boys and girls by working in pedagogical activities will help them to improve their abilities, mobility, and their understanding of their tasks and homework. The emphasis is to promote the participation of the children in education and to create a good dynamic between the student and the teacher.
- Although most of the activities are inside of the centre, it is also important to take the children and adolescents out on excursions to teach them values, to give them knowledge on how to adapt to what happens outside and of course for recreational activities.
While working in this project the volunteer will give ‘a lot of love to all’.
Volunteer Profile
The Project is looking for volunteers who are willing to unite their strengths with others and to help and support socially abandoned people. The volunteers, men and women aged 18-40, should have some experience in working with children, though the most important is that they care about other people and know how to show love. The project recommends, although it isn’t necessary, that the volunteers come with a friend or in a small group.
Accommodation
Unfortunately the project cannot provide accommodation or food to the volunteers. They can choose to live in a family or in a hostel.
What does the Volunteer need to bring?
It would be a generous gesture and a good idea to give a donation, either economical so the school can decide what they need to buy, or you could bring a children’s book, a board game or other toys.
Volunteer Period
The work will be part-time, from Monday to Friday 8.00-12.00. During the weekends and holidays the volunteer can decide what to do, for instance take trips to other parts of the country in order to get to know the country a little better.
Requirements
An intermediate level of Spanish is required, although you will learn a lot of Spanish quickly once being in Ecuador. If the volunteer is not at this level, Ecuador Volunteer could help him/her to find the best program to improve their Spanish skills before starting the project. |
