Volunteering with adolescents

Project Description

This project has been set up with the help and cooperation of mothers to ensure their children are looked after whilst parents are out working.  The children who attend the center are from low-income families and many live solely with their mothers.

The project’s main objective is to provide assistance to children and adolescents between the ages of 5 and 14 years who attend the center after school.  Of fundamental importance is the supervision and care of the 60 young people who attend the center, helping them with homework, health concerns, diet and, especially, recreation.

Responsibilities - Voluntary work is of great help in the teaching and educational support of the children. Many of the children attend different schools and student curricula can vary. As a result, it’s vital that educational assistance is structured to suit various ages. - Volunteers with knowledge of English will be required to give English classes and arrange a teaching plan that strengthens children’s current instruction at their respective schools. - Arranging sporting activities is also important and volunteers are encouraged to devise a constructive activity plan to take this into account. The center has a basketball court, and a football field is located nearby, where young people can play and partake in other sports. - Volunteers can also assist with the organization of trips and excursions both within and outside the city. Help in the center’s kitchen is also required as is assisting the small children during lunchtimes. - Volunteers can help with family counseling and in talking to parents to determine family setup and whether difficulties at home are leading to emotional and/or behavioral problems on the part of the child. Volunteers can compile reports based on the domestic situation and the child’s wellbeing in order to find the best solution for the child’s development. Such work is recommended for volunteers with studies in social work or psychology.
