Project Description


The principal aim of Hacienda Tranquila is to devise environmentally-friendly initiatives and activities that encourage collaboration between volunteers and local people and persuade islanders to adopt environmentally-sustainable practices. Of particular focus is finding ways for both visitors and islanders to get the most out of the scenic beauty located on the upper part of the Island.

Voolunteer Time A minimum of 2 weeks and a maximum of 12 weeks.

Responsibilities Volunteers will be involved in the elimination and control of non-endemic plants through the re-plantation of native species. Work with local members of the community in such activities as excavating pipes to help install the community's water supply. Work with children of the INNFA (project set up to encourage children's return to education and eliminate child labor) in addition the volunteers will help children with Hypo-Therapy and supervise the same. Promote environmental welfare amongst the children; act as environmental guide to student groups and educate them about the environmental projects we work on; carry out open-air educational/recreational activities. Attend to nursery plants. Technical assistance will be available to volunteers at all times.
Hours of Work 35 - 40 hours per week

Project availability Throughout the year.
Prerequisities University studies in environmental conservation or related subjects are not required. An interest in nature conservation and related activities, especially pertaining to human development, is needed. Intermediate level of Spanish.

Food
  • Unfortunately, food is not included.  The lodge has a kitchen in which meals can be prepared.

  • Transfer from the airport to location of the project or place of stay in Quito.
  • Practical, informative advice and support before, during and after project from a team of professionals.
  • In-country guidance to resolve potential issues that may arise during the project.
  • Guidance and evaluation to check on progress during volunteer period.
  • A facility at the organization office for making local calls.
  • Receiving of faxes.
  • Informative visitor guide with information on recreational activities.
  • Certificate of successful completion as volunteer.

Please note

San Cristobal is the second largest island in terms of population in the archipelago. There is abundant flora in the southern part of the island. The major city on the island and capital of the Galapagos is Puerto Baquerizo Moreno located in the southwest part. The famous naturalist, Charles Darwin, author of The Origin of Species, arrived on the island of San Cristobal in 1835.

Volunteers should: • Be interested in nature conservation. • Be proactive and able to demonstrate initiative. • Be team-spirited and able to maintain good working relationships. • Have intermediate level Spanish.

Steps to follow

When you have booked...


  • Once we receive your first email we will immediately contact you to give you general information about us and projects.
  • Select the project where you would like to participate.
  • Send your CV.
  • Participate in an interview.
  • You will receive an email about confirmation of your participation and we will prepare for your trip to Ecuador.
  • You should fill out certain documents of the Ecuador Volunteer Foundation, which we will send you opportunely.

After you have been selected as a volunteer...


  • Get your flight tickets.
  • Get travel insurance for the time that you will participate in our projects.
  • Get your Police Check or Police Disclosure.
  • Send us the documents of the Ecuador Volunteer Foundation filled out with the pertinent information.
  • Verify that you got certain vaccines as Yellow Fever, Hepatitis A & B, Diphtheria, Typhoid. We recommend getting the yellow fever vaccine and malaria pills as a precaution.
  • Get a medical certificate.
  • Fill out the Final Form that is on our website.
  • In the case that the volunteer is not a Hispanic speaker she/he must plan a Spanish course before entering in the project.
  • Give an exam in Spanish to check your knowledge in the language.
  • Check if you need a visa to enter in the country.
